research – Dispatchwork repairing a city

Dispatchwork is an art project that aims to replace missing bricks in cities and towns with recreations made of colorful lego, below are some example of the work that has been done. The project is about both removing the gray and dull from our city and also solving the deterioration that occurs day to day in our cities, towns and lifes.

The dispatchworks website says the following in thier manefesto available on the website.

Dispatchwork contradicts and satirizes the superimposed seriosity of constructions in the cityscape. Within all that rigidity and stiffness there are plenty of chances for your own creativity. The project also aims to put the focus on the playful, hands-on aspects of creation in our daily lives, and further, on the possibilities for participation to construe and design our own reality.

Research – walks around the city

I found maps of the Walk that are easily sign posted around the city center and areas that are of intereast most of the walk cover, or go near areas where there are events on for the Midsummer festival. Beside from the locations that each walk goes near by the walks are already a well established part of the tourist trail in Cork. The trails provide great views of the city to people who choose to take them bringing tourist to parts of the city that you would expect. Each of the brochures are posted below.

Research ~ Sound Builders

I found this series of video by a youTube channel called Motherboard. The series is called Sound builders and focuses on people who make unique instruments and sounds using everyday objects or unconventional methods. A video which I found interesting was this one.

In this video the creator of the instrument is talking about a hydraulophone which he describes as an underwater pipe organ in the video below you can see it being played.

Idea for midsummer festival

One of our ideas to do this focuses on people interacting with installation pieces that are placed in areas around the city. The pieces that people would interact with can be placed around the city in locations that people walk by or through everyday on their way to work or town.  Each of these locations could be themed in a way that would link the festival to the city. For example one area could be themed around the Shandon Clock. Another area could be themed like ships which would link with the port of Cork.

Each of the installation pieces would be made from recycled or recovered material and be a bespoke instrument that anyone walking by could stop and play with. Each location would then be filled with unique sounds which would bring each individual area to life.

Unexpected places in cork

The tagline for the 2015 festival is: “Unique events in unexpected places”

Cork is a small city with plenty of history and there are areas in the city which many people have never been to but they have lived in cork for a long time. There are also only parts of Cork City that are in the city that people who visit cork are likely to never see.

The project should encourage people to explore the city of Cork not just people visiting but also people who live here day-to-day and never take the time to see the sites and culture that the city has to offer. If people take time to explore the city then will be able to find areas that they enjoy, meet people and make friends as well as taking party in the “craic” that is happening around the city.

(null)

I wrote a list of all of the areas that I could think of in cork that could be hold an event or be part of a event trail.

  • Red Abbey (off Douglas St.)
  • Fitzgerald Park and surrounding area
  • The Lough
  • The art gallery in the church on north main street
  • Tryskal arts center and cinema up stairs
  • The shadon tower and surrounding area
  • Blackrock castle
  • Elizabith Fort
  • Cork City Gaol
  • St. Kevin Asylum (old mental hospital)
  • The Lee Fields Walk
  • The docklands and surrounding area
  • The viaduct
  • On the many streets around the city such as:
    • North Main Street
    • Patrick Street
    • Winthrop Street
  • The beamish and crawford site Soon to be known as the brewery Quater
  • UCC – Campus & Grounds
  • Rory Gallagher Place (burried in Ballincollig)
  • Blarney castle and grounds
  • The area infront of the Opera house
  • The Grand Parade and English Market.

While some of these places are not in cork city centre such as blaney they are ares which would allow for people to explore and see what is see Cork. Some of these areas are parts of the city that people pass everyday during their daily commute to work or college, for people to actually stop and take in the scenery they miss everyday.

Cork’s midsummer Festival

Cork Midsummer Festival is organized every year during June. The festival is held with the aim of promoting Cork city and strives to develop & boost reputation and culture of Cork as a City.

The 2015 slogan or tagline for the midsummer festival is “Unique events in unexpected places ”

For 2015 the festival would like to create something that roots Cork and the festival itself. For this project it important that our project promotes the interaction between people attending the various event, the organizers and the festival itself. It is therefore important that the festival and the city are tied together as one thing, that they are connected. The project should communicate and promote the atmosphere and culture of cork.

The festival hosts a range of events from the all artistic backgrounds and creative fields. These events include theatre, dance, music including opera, visual art, family & special events.

The festival wants to be recognized in a way similar to that of arts festivals held in other cities such as the Edinburgh fringe which is the worlds largest arts festival and holds over 3000 events in 25 or so days.
